The Mind
I talk on this topic quite a bit, and today I want to take a deep dive into it 2 parts of it specifically. The Conscious Mind, and the Subconscious Mind.
The easiest way to think about these 2 things is like an old tape recorder.
When you press record and talk into the recorder, it takes down whatever you say, this is like your Conscious Mind.
When you press play on a tape recorder, whatever’s on the tape plays, over and over, this is like your Subconscious.
Your Subconscious Mind is like the tape, it plays what’s been recorded into it over and over, but instead of a voice, it plays our behaviors.
In fact, this is what controls 95% of your day-to-day behavior. Crazy right?
So, how does it get programmed then? And how can you step and rerecord what’s been programmed already?
This is the topic of this week’s post!
The Conscious Mind
You are only using your Conscious Mind about 5% of the time. This means that most of your day-to-day behavior is below your Conscious experience.
For those of you who are freaked out by this, fear not, you wouldn’t want to be aware of most of these things anyway!
Imagine having to consciously tell your heart to beat every second, or telling your stomach to digest. etc.
The Conscious Mind has the bandwidth to process about 126 bps (bits per second). and you get to control which ones you pick up on.
For example, can you feel your clothes on your body right now?
I just shifted your Conscious 126 bps to your clothes, but before that, where was the feeling?
The Subconscious Mind
That feeling was there, it was just in your Subconscious.
Your Subconscious can process around 2 million bps, that’s 16k more bps than your Conscious Mind…
Your Subconscious does a ton for you, like controlling your breathing, heart rate, digestion, etc.
What most people are less aware of, are some of the other things it stores in those 2 million bits.
Things like “I’m not good enough”, “I’m not worthy” or “I’ll never make enough money” are also stored here.
Sometimes we’re aware of beliefs like these, but a lot of the time, your Subconscious “tape recorder” was programmed when you were growing up by your parents, teachers, siblings, coaches, etc.
By the time we’re adults, these programs have been repeated so many times, over and over, they’re buried deep in those 2 million bits of our Subconsious.
Sometimes this is awesome, having a Subconscious belief that there is no failure, only feedback is empowering and works in your favor.
Other times beliefs about money, relationships, career, or life, in general, can work against us and our highest intention.
The Boat Analogy
To demonstrate this, it’s easiest to think of your Conscious mind as the captain of your ship.
Your Subconsious is like the Rowers underneath the deck of your boat.
When you have a goal, your Conscious Mind is directing the ship, and the Rowers follow its directions.
However, sometimes there are some rouge Rowers (limiting beliefs), and no matter what direction your Captain points, they’re Rowing in the opposite direction!
This causes your ship to shift off course, or even drag you in the opposite direction of your goals.
This means your Subconscious Mind is not coherent with your Conscious Mind.
We’ve all felt this before, we say we want to start working out, but when it comes time to workout, those subconscious Rowers, or our limiting beliefs, convince us otherwise!
Subconscious Check-Up
That being said, now that you know where these limiting beliefs hang out, you can find them a little bit easier!
If you’re wondering what yours are, take a moment right now and do a Subconscious Check-Up.
Think of a goal you have, or something you’ve always wanted to do/quit, but somehow end up not getting the result you want.
This means there’s something in your subconscious that’s rowing in the opposite direction of where you want to go!
Examine this, and get deep, you’ll know when you’ve found the belief because it strikes a chord in you.
Some other examples could be, “I’m not worthy enough to make money” “I don’t deserve happiness” “I’m not smart enough to get a promotion” “I’m too ugly to deserve love” “Old dogs can’t learn new tricks” and the list goes on.
I’ve heard tons of these when I work with people. The goal is not to judge yourself for the belief, but to look at it as something that once helped you, but now it’s time to upgrade it!
Theta Waves Hack
Now that you’ve examined your beliefs, it’s time to start rewriting them!
To do this, we need to use your Conscious Mind to hit “record” on the tape recorder inside of your Subconsious so we can record a new belief in!
There are some advanced techniques I use with my clients that I would need to be with you to do, but today, I wanted to give you a hack you can use on your own!
I call them Theta Wave Affirmations.
What are Theta Waves? They’re the type of brainwaves your brain emits in the evening, a few hours before bedtime, typically.
When your brain is emitting Theta waves, you’re subconscious is more open to suggestion, and rewriting.
That makes this window of time perfect for you to do some Theta Wave Affirmations with your Conscious Mind.
To create the Affirmations, take a look at the limiting beliefs you wrote out. How could you alter them so the opposite is true, or alter them into a positive statement?
For example, “I’m not smart enough" —> “I can learn anything I put my mind to” or “I’m ugly & don’t deserve love” —> “I am beautiful and loved”
Once you have your affirmations written out, find some time before bed to say them out loud a few times.
DO NOT just go through the motions with these, when you say them take the time to really feel them, experience them, visualize them and truly believe the words you’re saying!
If you just go through the motions, your Subconscious won’t mark them as important, and you won’t be overriding the programming that’s already there.
This part is very important if you want this to work!
Now, do this for 63-84 Days, and you will be on your way to getting all of your Rowers, rowing in the same direction 🧠
