Darren Hardy had a great message in one of his DarrenDailies this week, and I wanted to share it with ya’ll!
It’ll be a shorter one, but massively impactful I promise.
The subtitle of this explains it well, but what are the Thinker, and the Prover?
The Thinker is that voice in your head that’s constantly running in the background, sometimes consciously, but more often subconsciously!
The Thinker is the “I’m not _____ enough.” What’s the word for you? Worthy? Good? Smart?
Whatever it is, and I’ve heard ‘em all, and that’s your Thinker!
The scary part about this is that your Prover is listening, and it’s only job is to prove your Thinker right…
That means when your Thinker is going on about how you’re not good enough, your Prover goes into your memory bank, finds the few times that’s been true, and proves to you whatever you’re thinking is true!
Not only does the Prover remind you and reinforce what your Thinker is thinking, but it drives your actions or non-actions.
For example:
Thinker: “I’m not smart enough to start my own company.”
Prover: “You’re right, remember that time you tried to start a lemonade stand and failed?” “Or that time you in high school you tried to get into Chemistry Club, but got rejected?”
Then what happens? Nothing, because you believe you aren’t smart enough, and you get stuck in a loop.
The Secret
This seems like a pretty abysmal system, and it can be for some people, but not you, because I’m going to share the secret of this system with you!
It’s really simple, you have control over your Thinker. This means you technically have control over your Prover too!
Not many people understand this concept, and get stuck in Thinking-Proving loops like above, some people spend their whole lives in these loops.
So, how do you escape? You hack the cycle with upgraded thoughts and if you want to take it one step further, you use your Thinker to ask powerful questions!
Let’s look at another example:
Thinker: “I am smart enough to start my own company!” Or in questions form “Why must I start my own company?”
Prover: “Hell yes you are, remember that time your lemonade stand failed so you decided to go door to door with candy bars instead and sold out every day?” Or in response to the question, “You must because you want freedom over your time, which means more time with your kids! Remember how much you love them? Start the company!”
Then what happens? ACTION baby! Your Provers only job is to prove the Thinker right! If you take control of your thinking with better thoughts and questions, you’re only giving your Prover one option!
It’s simple for sure, but not easy. These are the small steps to work on with people all the time!
Some of the most disempowering things our Thinkers think are below our awareness, and it takes time and practice to find them in our minds, but it is possible!
Take Action Today!
Take a moment today to write down 3 things you’d like to Prove to yourself, and then reverse engineer what that means your Thinker needs to be thinking.
Once you’ve got them, find a creative way daily to remind yourself of these initial thoughts, try it out for 63 days, I promise you won’t regret it! 👍🏻
Live Heroically.
