I grew up in a home where anger was always a scary thing. I became an adult who was afraid of my own anger. I am generally described as a very even-keeled person, but there were those leakages you described. Not anything that left others afraid, but yes, I’d snap at someone over a small issue, etc. When I finally decided I needed to learn how to express anger in a healthy way instead of burying it or talking myself out of it, the resources I was given weren’t helpful in how to process the issues behind the emotion. It was mostly the myths you listed to regulate myself, along with a reminder that anger is simply another emotion providing information. I like the guidelines you’ve provided because they address ways to calm the physiological response and ways to resolve the unfinished business causing the anger. I’ve copied the tools into my Notes and I hope I’ll actually use them next time I’m mad or resentful.

Thank you for this. It's been almost a year. We work together, so I can't afford to be outwardly angry. I have an explanation, but I am still SO FURIOUS. I've been furious since before we broke up. I'll give these a try, because sometimes I feel like I'm being eaten alive. 🙃
